Who Would Like To Spend Money On Movies?

A few days ago, I read a wonderful report on The Wall Street Journal daily which

told that Apple company met with great obstacles when they tried to convince the Hollywood film companies to support its iCloud technology which allow users to view their movie purchases on any multimedia devices including Notebook, Apple TV, iPad, iPod, iPhone etc. In addition, HBO television also does not allow their films to be sold via electronic Pipeline.

But in the real film market, who else would like to spend money on movies? As for me, when I want to sit down to watch a movie on Saturday night, I have many choices and no one choice needs me to spend $16 ~ $20 to buy a film copy. I can rent a new movie through cable television video on demand or Apple TV iTunes. If I want to watch old movies, I can choose Netflix video stream, or HBO and Amazon video on demand, these channels to provide you with sufficient choice.

Note: The drawback of renting digital movies is that the rentals are encrypted by DRM (Digital Right Management) which limit the use of the digital contents. However, you can use a free DRM removal program to make iTunes DRM removal, Amazon instant video DRM removal etc.

In fact, there are many guys like me who prefer renting movies to buying. According to the data offered by Digital Entertainment Group, last year Americans spend $0.553 billion on movie purchases, but up to $2.8 billion on movie rentals.

Richard Greenfield from BTIG research organization also offered a similar opinion in an article. This article mentioned that Wal-Mart is staging a plan of letting people take their own DVDs to Wal-Mart store, and they will help them digitize their DVDs. Greenfield wrote:

"Even if consumers own a huge digital film library through converting physical DVDs to digital contents, we still think that it will be also difficult to encourage consumers to buy movies in the future. Just simply click your Mouse, you can rent too much contents via iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, HBOGO, Showtime Anytime and more."

Of course, the film company are anxious to find a way to make consumers continue to buy DVD, because the profit they make from selling DVD is much higher than renting. But the fact against film company is that the reasons for buying movies do not have much conviction because we can rent movies that we want any where any time.

There will be some exceptions like movies of children (Because the kids will watch a movie repeatedly) and the home theater versions of the popular movies like 'Avatar' and 'Lord of the Rings' etc. Except for these movies, do you really think that it is necessary to buy a movie copy?
