Weve heard of man purse. Weve heard of men wearing manicure. Weve discovered guys garbed in womens clothes, no hang on, thats crossing dressing already (not that theres anything incorrect with it.) But what about men sporting skirts?
Kilts are common. Theyre a part of a Scottish tradition especially when theyre having a wedding. There are even kilt rentals available for that kind of theme. But what if guys begin wearing kilts for daily outfit? Wouldnt that be the innovation of the century?
But, truth is, mens skirt, other than kilts, are definitely more prevalent than we think. For the longest period, men had been wearing skirts and not simply for the reason that its cozy. Impressive men, men of religious effect, men who go into battle, look at your history textbooks and youll see all of these men wearing skirts.
History
In older days there werent actually any trousers. Everybody donned skirts. Pants are in fact underwear, like underpants or long johns or panties. Skirts were first devised in Armenia in 3,900 B.C. Weaved from straws, men and women of any culture wear skirt and have their very own variance of it. Theres lungi, kanga and sarong in Asia and the common kilt in Scotland.
If you examine historical Egyptian works of art, you could basically see the evidence that everyone from the pharaoh down to the slaves wore skirts. Sumerians wore skirts. Greeks donned togas. Chinese wore dresses. And lets not forget the kimonos that the Japanese love to wear.
World domination in a skirt
Even Macedonian king, the famous Alexander the Great dominated the whole world, riding horses and leading battles, dressed in a skirt. He could point out it was a tunic, but if its not stitched in the middle its a skirt. When Christopher Columbus found America he was dressed in a nice little knee-high skirt.
This brings us to the concept that maybe if Hitler had put on a skirt he would have succeeded in lording it over the world. Although were digressing and thats another story. However you should give it to the Aztec Indians who wore nothing else but loincloths. And its just to protect the sensitive parts of the body.
Skirt-wearing decreased at some point within the Victorian era. Thats when men were regarded too flashy with their garments and were demoted to putting on more sober clothes. Thus came the trousers and skirts were never seen once again in males.
Making a comeback
The rebellious decade of the 1960s saw an attempt to bring back skirts on men. There emerged this unisex fashion movement which tried to blur the line between mens clothes and womens garment. However the skirt thing didnt really catch on. The best it completely changed among guys were velvet trousers, flowered or frilled shirts and neckties, and long hair.
In the 70s, a person single-handedly tried to promote guys to put on skirts. He contended that theyre practical since it doesnt abrade the groin spot, its cool on a warm environment and symbolically, men can absorb female attributes. He wrote many articles on it, made a trip on talk shows. Clearly skirt wearing still never stuck on.
But, its early. Trend has a way of recycling itself. There will come a period when its not only the kilts that men will wear but actual skirts.
