To answer that question we have to look back as far as late 1800's to early 1900's. Back then due to the large land mass and also climate, Russia and America (and Canada) were the leading fur merchants across the world.

However, in the early 1920's the two countries had completely two different historical backgrounds. On one hand, USA was going through the roaring 20's and started to focus on chemical engineering which changed everything from household goods to the core culture of the people. This development along with other events launched America into the technological forefront. Meanwhile, fur techniques were lost in the archives of the old age.

On the other hand, during the same period, Russia was going through a revolution which mentally and financially bankrupted the country. Afterwards, all the technological efforts were focused mainly on weaponry for decades to come while the lifestyle remained the same.

To this day Russia has retained its biological approach for retrieving fur and caring for it. Russia has not lost its secrets, the family fur care recipes, and techniques passed on from generation to generation. This has made Russia's fur far better quality and longer lasting compared to USA's dominant chemical approach created for quick consumption and disposal.
