Manitoba's wholesale sector posted its biggest monthly sales decline in seven years in May, according to new figures issued Wednesday -- and much of that decline can be blamed on the wet weather.Statistics Canada said substantially weaker sales of farm fertilizer and other agricultural inputs across the Prairies produced seasonally adjusted declines of 9.1 per cent in Manitoba and 12.3 per cent in Saskatchewan, after heavy rains across the region this spring left millions of acres of farm land unseeded.The agency doesn't break down the provincial seasonally adjusted data, so the exact size of the decline in wholesale jewelry sales is not available.
However, it does provide a breakdown for the raw, or unadjusted, sales figures for each province, and while they show an increase in sales of agricultural supplies from April to May in Manitoba, the increase is only a fraction of what it normally is -- 13 per cent versus about 100 per cent in each of the previous five years.A StatsCan official said the seasonally unadjusted sales figures for the other six wholesale sub-sectors were all in line with those for the previous five years. Norbert Desilet, general manager of Terraco, a farm supply dealership and retailer with several locations around the outskirts of Winnipeg, said his fertilizer sales early in the year were up because of an early dry spring in southern Manitoba that allowed farmers in this part of province to finish seeding early. But it was downhill from there.
"We did have a good seeding season," he said. "But then the rain came creating problems with moisture and lots of crops dying off or not worth spraying, so our herbicide and fungicide inputs are down dramatically."
