Polyester is a 20th Century synthetic fibre derived from Coal, Air, Water and Petroleum. It is formed from a chemical reaction between an acid and alcohol. There are two types of polyester: PET, which is polyethylene terephthalate and PCDT, which is poly-1, 4-cyclohexylene-dimethylene terephthalate. The fibres can be formed from very long molecules, which make the yarn stable, & strong. Almost 40% of the world production of polyester is directly used to make Polyester Yarn. There are three types of polyester yarn: Textured, filament and spun. The main properties of polyester are in textiles to produce Polyester Yarns. Polyester is found in different forms in textiles. Polyester filament yarns is used in knitting & weaving to make polyester fabrics such as consumer fabrics and home furnishing like curtains, bed sheets, bed spreads and draperies. Similarly Polyester high tenacity industrial yarns can be used to make ropes, conveyor belts, and safety belts & tire fabric. Apart from textiles is also used to make polyester film, insulation tapes, strapping and several other daily use items. United States of America first introduced it in 1951. It soon became the fastest growing fibre. By 1960, this easy to maintain permanent press fabric made polyester double knits extremely popular. But it was only until 1990 that this form of fabric re-entered the market in an improved form as they introduced polyester fibre called microfiber. It was this fibre that had luxurious and versatile silk like qualities.
