Wholesalers And The Way They Impact On The Country

Wholesalers are what keep Britains little business ticking

. They supply businesses with large quantities of products at discounted prices. The industry itself has grown and had had to develop as the world of technology and communication has developed. As well as this the demand for wholesalers has increased which have helped many wholesalers become well known and very successful despite tough economic times.

If you go back to the 1980s wholesaler were more of a secretive business. If you wanted to get into your local wholesaler you had to provide documents to prove that you were a trader or a business owner then when you did get in the products you needed were there. Back then you could not mail order your products you were left to drive to its location and get your products. These stores were often hidden away in a warehouse in a random industrial estate but this is not the case anymore.

The way in which technology has developed has left wholesalers trying to catch up with developments. Although the industry as a whole tried to avoid the internet at first they were eventually pushed in to it just to save their businesses. This is because Chinese wholesalers were now getting in contact with their customers and offering these products online at lower prices. This forced the industry to match their competitors from around the world. Then the birth of drop shipping began. This is basically when they deliver your products to your business to make it convenient. Although the convenience is true it was more a desperate attempt to win back customers within the UK.

Since then the industry has begun to grow many branded wholesalers have started appearing around the country and opening more depots with one company having over 170 depots for customers to use. Different wholesalers do offer different items with some offering more food products and other offering more practical products like catering equipment etc. Some wholesalers have transferred their operations completely online so anyone from around the world can order their products like wholesalers in China did a few years ago. This has also led to an increase in sales for the wholesalers making it a rather profitable industry at the moment. The low prices that they offer is what is helping them survive the economic recession with many doing better than normal.

The growth in the wholesale industry in recent times has been substantial and this shows once again who well the industry is doing. In 2007 the market was worth 23.9bn pounds and then it grew to 26.6bn pounds in 2011. This rise looks set to continue as well because with many small businesses opening the need for wholesalers will increase and then in turn their revenue will increase for many years to come.

There are different types of wholesalers and these operate in different ways. Firstly there is Cash & Carry and these operate basically in the same way to wholesalers except you cannot buy products on credit this way it is all paid for in cash; these are becoming more popular as businesses do not want to takes risks anymore. Another type of wholesaler is the delivered food service wholesalers. These deliver meals and other food to whoever wants them; generally schools are the main customers for these businesses. The final main type of wholesaler is the delivered grocery wholesaler and these just deliver groceries instead of operating a depot for customers to visit. Both of the final operate completely online and often have contracts with various customers.

The wholesale industry varies a lot with many different types of wholesalers offering different types of products. Some wholesalers try to focus mainly on utility/homeware products while others may face mainly offer food and drink products. This helps certain depots specialize with certain products which can then help the consumer. The bigger branded wholesalers tend to have a bit of everything and although this can sound it means they do miss out on a lot of products which can in turn leave some customers wondering where they can get a certain product from.

When buying goods at a wholesaler they are generally not required to charge their customers a sales tax. This helps the prices decrease and makes it easier for wholesalers to compete on price and with businesses trying to cut costs this is becoming more and more important. Although this is the case wholesalers are sometimes required to charge a special wholesale tax which is not that much.
