I love to cook, but I've learned the hard way that trying to do so for a big party can be exhausting and rapidly turn into a complete disaster

. If the party is for your office, trying to bring in homemade food or create a potluck has equal potential to become a catastrophe.

One of the best ways to ensure a smoother, more enjoyable party-going (or hosting) experience is to have your next get-together catered. But if your wedding reception was catered, you know that some catering services cost an arm and a leg.

You want to enjoy a hearty meal among good company, but you don't want to do so knowing your wallet will be so much slimmer than your belly at the end of the night. But it's all right--I have some experience in this arena, so I can give you some valuable tips on how to choose a caterer for your next holiday gathering, garden party, or office shindig.

First, you will want to decide how formal your fete will be. A major event may seem to call for a sit-down meal, complete with servers and fine china. But a more casual open house-style mingling may be amenable to a buffet.

The nature of the event and how involved you want guests to be in obtaining their own meal will play a major part in determining the cost of the catering. It is always possible to find a middle ground between the black tie affair and the casual dine-and-dash.

Ask around at your favorite restaurants, pubs, or sports bar San Francisco has to offer. You might be surprised by which ones offer catering services, and their selections might be more appetizing than a standard set of cold cuts from the neighborhood sandwich shop.

Some restaurants may not cater, but they do provide some of their choice menu items in bulk orders, so you can send someone to pick up the main course, so long as you rent or own heating pans to keep the meal at a prime temperature for the whole of the revel.

Find out if it is possible to split the cost with colleagues or co-hosts. That can potentially open up your options, but don't automatically assume that you can foist the burden onto your office. To cut costs at a party, minimize or entirely eliminate alcoholic beverages. This not only cuts costs for everyone, it keeps everyone safer, making it less likely that someone will get behind the wheel after the soiree winds down.
