Why A Career As A Medical Transcriptionist Is My Goal

As it has for so many others, this has been a very rough year for my family. My husband is an over-the-road truck driver whose wages were cut numerous times during the year, due to union give-backs and job reductions. When it reached the point that we were no longer able to pay our mortgage, we made the hard decision for him to leave our state and try to find work in another state with a better cost of living. I had a well-paying job with benefits at a local bank, and we felt I could take up the slack while he made the transition. My husband left our state in July, and in November I was able to join him, along with our daughter, in our new state, most of the way across the country.

I had to leave my job in order to reunite our family. The house we owned has been under consideration for a short sale for more than six months; the threat of foreclosure is always there. Weve rented a nice apartment in a city that we like, but its impossible to keep up with all our financial obligations on just my husbands pay. My daughter started kindergarten at the public school here. I felt that, with all the upheaval in her life, and that fact that her daddy is absent for long periods of time, it would be great if I could work while she was in school, and not have to put her in daycare. Its difficult to find work that starts at 9:30, ends at 3:00, and ends at 12:30 on Wednesdays, when her school has early dismissal. Theres no way I could start a new job, much less a career, with that kind of schedule to work with. Medical transcription jobs at home seem to be the kind of career that could offer the flexibility to fit that schedule. It would also enable me to be able to pick my husband up from the truck stop whenever he rolls into town. SN:0TG9Y2ESY

This career also seems like it would be a good fit for me. I have a good grasp of English, and have been told Im a good writer. Ive had many jobs that I needed to be a proofreader and an editor for, and I know Im good at that. I think I even have a good feel for medical terminology! I like challenge and need to be stimulated by my work to perform well, yet I dont need the companionship of co-workers in order to make it through the day. I like the self-directed approach that Future MT takes, and I also like the fact that Ill be able to work at my own pace. Ive looked into college courses, and I frankly cant wait that long to begin working. I want and need to start working as soon as I can! Im not too sure where a career as an online medical transcriptionist could take me, but I believe that with experience, I could really excel at this. The first step is to get the education I need, the next step is to get the job and the experience. I like Future MTs attitude about that, too.
