Why A Cure For Psoriasis May Be A Long Way Off

If yourself or anyone close to you suffers from psoriasis

, then you probably know just how much of a burden it can be. It isn't so much as a physical health burden, given that having patches of psoriasis on your skin does not actually do you any harm, but a psychological burden. Given that psoriasis manifests itself in unsightly patches of scaly skin that most people find repulsive to look at, it is a condition that can have one feeling like a social outcast. And to make matters worse, there is currently no medical cure for the condition.

The main reason why modern science has still not been able to provide us with a cure for this disease, is quite simply because we don't yet fully understand why it occurs in the first place. It is not for want of trying either, because the big pharmaceutical companies know just how desperate psoriasis sufferers are, and that they would be willing to pay whatever was asked to finally have a cure. Sadly, despite the efforts of modern science, we are still a long way off having a cure for psoriasis on the market.

Of course, that doesn't stop these pharmaceutical companies from cashing in on the plight of psoriasis sufferers. Some might even argue they are entitled to, given they are investing money into new research that will hopefully someday lead to a cure. The steroid creams and oral medications available for psoriasis today can be effective, but they are certainly no cure. These products simply treat the symptoms of the disease rather than the cause, because the actual cause is still not known.

The problem with these steroid based medications is that, although they can work at clearing up the scaly patches on your skin, prolonged use of them is not safe. In the case of the topical steroid treatments, using them continually for too long will result in the skin becoming thin and weak. This means the skin will break and bleed with just the slightest of knocks, and this will leave it open to infection. Because these topical steroid treatments are only effective whilst you continue to use them, once you stop you will see the psoriasis begin to return again.

Another drawback to topical steroid treatment is that they don't come cheap, and if you have patches of psoriasis that cover a large area of skin, you can expect to be spending a lot of money on them. In fact, most doctors would not advise the use of topical steroids for such a widespread case of psoriasis, for this very reason and the fact that applying cream to such a large area becomes impractical. Instead, they would probably suggest a course of UV light therapy.

This light therapy involves exposing the skin affected by psoriasis to ultraviolet rays with special UV lamps, and it has proven to be an effective method of treating the condition. Results are generally favourable, but again they are only temporary. Once you stop using the UV therapy, the psoriasis will start to return. Sadly, until an effective cure appears on the market, temporary relief from psoriasis is about the best modern medicine has to offer.
