Why Addressing Diabetes Is Important For Overall Health
Becoming a caregiver usually means you have an elderly family member or an injured person who needs help with daily life
. Yet, diabetes often results in the need for home care and can affect anyone from the elderly to young children.
Statistics from the American Diabetes Association state that in the U.S., upwards of 79 million people have a pre-diabetic condition that may lead to Type 2 diabetes and that around 26 million children and adults actually live with it. This is a condition that occurs when the body doesn't convert sugars into energy properly.
Even though approximately 1/4th of all American adults over 60 are affected by diabetes, there is no cure as of now. This means it is becoming a significant health issue and when it comes to addressing diabetes, many factors come into play such as diet, exercise, medications, costs and even other illnesses. Because of this, one spouse winds up becoming the primary caregiver for the other, especially as the disease progresses.
Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, is when the body can't make its own insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common and is generally related to poor nutrition and obesity. This means that older adults are at higher risk for Type 2 diabetes because of their reduced physical activity and lack of dietary attention. The American Diabetes Association website has a lot of information about diabetes including indicators to check to see if you or someone you love may be suffering from diabetes.
Diabetics are also at higher risk of other illnesses such as blindness, kidney disease, heart disease and stroke. Also, according to the Diabetes Association of America, people with diabetes are responsible for over sixty percent of lower limb amputations that aren't caused by some type of trauma such as a car accident. Because of an impaired senses and numbness, many may not feel an injury or cut to their feet. That means they're more likely to be unaware of an infection so addressing diabetes means taking special precautions.
A few important ways to avoid Type 2 diabetes is by living a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating a healthy diet. Even walking a little every day will make a big difference in your overall health. Moderation and consistency with your diet and exercise are the keys to maintaining a healthy weight. Having friends and family members and a team of professionals, to ensure all aspects associated with addressing diabetes is important as well.
