Why Airport Security Is Universal
No matter where you are in the world, if ever want to travel by plane then airport
security is going to be something you'll get firsthand experience of. There are few other areas of life where you'll be subjected to such scrutiny; not only will your passports and travel documents be checked but your luggage will be bombarded with x-rays and you'll pass through a metal detector at a bare minimum.
Depending on how things go, you could even be subjected to a search of your possessions (or possibly worse). Not only that but the whole facility is constantly under scrutiny from a range of technological and personal security solutions, from CCTV cameras to chemical sniffers and even dog patrols and often armed guards. In comparison, maritime travel is a completely straightforward experience - you get on the ship and often all that's checked is your paperwork.
Now, many people complain about airport security. Not only because of the perpetual paranoia that seems to fill the entire facility (don't leave your bags) or the stringent restrictions it places on you (don't carry bottled water on board) but also because of the issue of time. Passing everyone through security can easily add over an hour to the amount of time it takes to check-in and get into the boarding area - and those planes don't wait forever.
Inconvenience however is a small price to pay for security. At the risk of sounding alarmist, airport security is to a great extent an extremely sensible precaution.
In simple terms of crime prevention, an airport is a travel hub - often for international travel. The criminal element would dearly love to be able to use commercial air travel to ship the highly valuable but often highly controlled products of their trade from one country to another - from one market to another. It's only the high level of security around airports that stops them from becoming hotbeds of smuggling activity.
A more troubling factor is the target that an airport and air-travel in general presents for attack. Huge numbers of people pass through airports at all hours of the day; they come, they go, they are of all colours, creeds and nationalities. This is part of the reason why their attractive sites for criminals - lots of places to blend in.
Sadly the numbers of people are also one of the main reasons why they are such prominent targets for terrorism. This is pretty much true of all travel hubs - of all areas where people gather in huge numbers regularly - though there are some aspects peculiar to commercial aviation that makes it an even more tempting target.
Unlike any other form of travel, aviation passengers carry lots of luggage. This presents a lot of opportunities to carry explosive devices or other forms of weaponry such as firearms. Then there's the aeroplanes themselves; there's a high concentration of people on the average aeroplane and potentially there's a very high lethality rate in attacks on aircraft.
Airport security is everywhere because these kind of murderous and sinister elements are universal. These kind of risks don't change no matter where you are (though certain areas are more likely to be targeted than others).
The inconvenience of security is a small price to pay if just one attack is prevented in just one place. Worldwide, hundreds of incidents have been averted by the levels of security in airports.
