Why am I so thirsty? It's a very common reason for people to visit their doctor. There are many reasons for this, and it can turn out to be something really simple, like just not drinking enough, through to more serious medical conditions. But constantly feeling like you need to reach for yet another glass of water is not a pleasant situation to be in, so you will need to find out why you are always so thirsty.

Diabetes

Excessive thirst can be one of the first symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes. The disease is caused by the body's insulin production being inhibited, and therefore the sugar level in you blood rises. To counteract this, the body tries to excrete the excess sugar via the urine. And because of this, you become much more thirsty. If you find these symptoms carry on, then you will need to consult your doctor who can perform a very simple test to find out if diabetes is the problem.

Drugs and other medications

Drugs such as anti histamines or diuretics (drugs which make you pee) can increase your levels of thirst. All medications come with a leaflet which will list any side effects, so make sure you take a look at these before commencing taking them.

Eating salty foods

This may sound very obvious, but sometimes you may not even realise that the food you are eating is high in salt. Modern processing methods can add large quantities of salts to food, especially pre-packaged food, soups and certain ready meals. To be sure, check out the ingredients which must by law be listed on the outer food packaging. For salt, look at the levels of sodium.

Excessive thirst is not a nice thing to suffer from. It may not even be that obvious to you, you may well just think that you have a dry mouth. But this, and dry gums can all be a symptom of there not being enough fluid in your body. It may be necessary to seek medical advice to find out the reason to your problem - why am I so thirsty?
