. Why are animals costumes so popular? A great question certainly. It is fun to dress up in a costume or mask, and everyone recognizes animals, where not everyone may recognize the latest movie superhero or cartoon figure. Animal costumes are popular with both adults and children.

Humans have lived with animals for thousands of years. Some, like donkeys and goats, have been domesticated for 5000 years or so. Many of these animals are popular in religions, myth,proverbs, literature,fables, films, and folklore. It's just natural that we'd dress like them for parties.

Often the most popular animals will depend on what is popular in the movies. For example, after the Shrek movies, many people started dressing as donkeys, as "Donkey" was a good friend of Shrek and popular in the movie. Similarly the movie Dumbo by Disney set off a bunch of elephant costumes.

One important thing is not to dress as the trendiest animal, or you may find yourself in a room with several others dressed similarly. Be a little creative, and pick an animal that is not as mainstream at the moment. It's also good to pick one that suits your temperament and perhaps body type. I'd make a poor sheep or mouse, but a great elephant or gorilla!

You can buy costumes easily and cheaply many places, or you can be creative and make your own if you are so inclined and have just a bit of skill.
