Why Are My Hands And Feet Itchy?

Every now and then, we have experienced an itchy hand or foot

. It is very bothersome and totally annoying for some who have experienced this. Sometimes the itching is accompanied with rashes and some have watery blisters. So what are the causes of the itching?

There are numerous numbers of reasons for the itching of your hands and feet. The reasons are categorized into two. First category is called exogenous cause, which means that the cause is from the outside of the body. The second category is called endogenous cause, meaning the reason is from the inside of the body.

Under the exogenous causes includes contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is caused by irritants like soap, detergents, cosmetic products, and other allergy causing products like nickel and rubber. These items may result to itchy hands and feet. Severe itching of the hand may also occur after being in contact with garlic and some vegetables. Eating highly allergic foods like seafood can also result to itchy hands and feet. Taking medications like penicillin and sulfa drugs also make the same results. Contact dermatitis may also be triggered with contact of solvents, fiber glass and paints. The inflammatory response from secondary infection may also cause the itchiness of both hands and feet. Erupted pompholyx from bacterial or fungal infection may also cause the itching.

Endogenous causes are further classified into systemic causes, idiopathic causes, psychogenic causes, vitamin deficiency and dyshidrotic causes. Systemic disturbances in the body like kidney failure, endocrine disorders like hyeper- or hypothyroidism, blood disorders, all of this may result to itching of the hands and feet. Diseases like HIV infection and Crohns disease also results to generalize itching which may start at the feet and hands. The same is true with atopic dermatitis, senile pruritus, and aquagenic pruritus. If the reason for the itching is not known, then it is called idiopathic itchy palms and soles. Deficiency of vitamins B1, B6, and B12 may also result to burning sensation in the feet and hands accompanied by itching. When there are no visible rashes in the palms and soles, then the reason for the itching may be attributed to stress and anxiety. Excessive sweating of the hands and feet can also contribute to itching of hands and feet.

There are other skin conditions that can also cause itching of the hands and feet. This includes palmoplantar psoariasis or the scaling of the palms and soles. This may also be painful and scaling varies in grades. Ringworm in the hands and feet can also cause itching. Ringworms can be recognized by its rounded and scaly characteristic. If the itching is in the finger webs, then it may be a symptom of scabies. Nocturnal itching may start before the burrows can be visible. Candidal intertrigo is common to housewives, hairdressers, house cleaners and farmers. Candidal infection is visible in the web spaces of both the hand and sole and it causes itchiness and burning sensation.

If you are experiencing a persistent itching in the hands and feet, then it is advisable that you immediately refer this to your dermatologist to pinpoint the cause of the itching and necessary medications may be taken.
