Why Are There So Many Car Accidents? - Learn More About The Causes Of Accidents

Car accidents are a fact of life

Car accidents are a fact of life. In 2008, 2.35 million people were hurt and 37,261 people died as a result of a car accident. In some ways, this is an improvement. The numbers for 2008 are better than the numbers for 2007, especially in passenger cars, which comprise more than 90 percent of all registered vehicles. The number of people killed has declined every year for the last six years, and last years decrease was the biggest since 1982.

What causes car accidents?

The most common reason for car accidents is that a driver makes a mistake. For example, if you follow another car too closely, dont yield the right of way, drive too fast, or ignore red lights, you might easily cause a car accident. If a driver has been drinking or using drugs, it impairs the ability to drive and makes a mistake more likely. Observing the rules of the road is the best way to avoid these sorts of car accidents.

Accidents also occur when the driver is distracted. The distraction can be inside the car or outside the car. The classic example of a distraction inside a car would be talking or texting on a cell phone while driving. If there are children fighting in the car, and the driver is trying to calm things down while continuing to drive, that also constitutes a distraction.

If the weather is bad, the road is poorly designed, or the road is in poor condition because of inadequate maintenance, that can also cause an accident. If a road is extremely icy, even a skillful driver in a safe car with good tires might find it impossible to avoid a crash.

Sometimes the car has a serious defect or mechanical failure. Maybe the brakes failed, or the tire blew. Maybe the car was in a repair shop and whoever worked on it didnt make the repair correctly. Sometimes there are design defects that increase the likelihood of a car rolling or a gas tank igniting.
