Why Are Wooden Benches Donated To Schools And Parks

Wooden benches in parks and school yards are a great place to just sit and relax;

placed under trees or shady areas they make a perfect place for a lazy afternoon. But where do lots of the benches in parks and school yards come from? People donate, sponsor or adopt wooden benches at all sorts of locations from zoos to central city parks. A lot of time when I go by wooden benches they have a plaque on them saying donated from.

Maybe it was a well-loved long time school principal that retired and donated a bench to go under the oak tree in the school yard for the future students an, teacher and principals to enjoy. Or maybe it was someone who loved the citys parks and when they passed away it was in the will that some of the insurance money was to donate a wooden bench to their most visited and loved City Park. Maybe your children are all grown and you used to take them to the zoo often and you have many fond memories there, maybe you donate a bench in your familys name for future families to enjoy and rest upon.

For example, sponsoring a bench to a zoo is a wonderful way to either celebrate a familys specific special occasion or remember a loved one you have lost. Hundreds or even thousands of people visit the zoo every month and will walk by or sit on that bench leaving the loving memory of your donation to pass on for generations. In New York City the Adopt-A-Bench program began in 1986 and most cities and states have followed with their own city and state parks. Adopting, donating or sponsoring benches in local parks is a great way to support your local community and remember loved ones.

Other places wooden benches are often donated or sponsored are childrens baseball fields, playgrounds, beaches, community centers, and around architectural buildings. People also donate or sponsor wooden benches to these areas for all different reasons not just for retirements or to remember loved ones they lost. They sponsor or adopt them to celebrate weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries, also for celebrating high school or college graduations or the birth of a new family member. Some families instead of buying Christmas gifts donate or adopt wooden benches in their favorite locations every year as a Christmas tradition.

Simply put a bench is a piece of furniture in which several people can sit at once, in Yiddish a bench means to bless and in Jewish it refers to any number of blessings given or recited. Its no wonder donating a bench is like a blessing to the community. From donating them to the parks your children grew up playing in, to the lakes they swam in and to the schools they learned in. Donating, sponsoring or adopting a bench is a wonderful way to just say thank you and I will remember you.
