Why Australia Is A Great Place To Do An Mba
With Australia competing with established MBA study destinations such as Switzerland
and Spain to get a top six position in a recent QS TopMBA Applicant Survey, Australia's business schools have been confirmed as a real option for applicants hoping to get an MBA from top business school.
So what's happened to give Australia this boost? Australia is now the world's 13th largest economy, with a highly developed services sector. Graduates have the opportunity to work in tourist, financial, and entertainment industries; but the real source of their economic boom has been the abundance of Western Australian natural resources.
Iron-ore, gold, wheat, and natural gases are able to hold up this advanced economy. Part of the reason for this is the rapid economic growth in China, where increasing demand has dramatically driven up prices. Along with Chinese investment in raw materials, many Chinese students are choosing to study in Australia, which is closer geographically and culturally to China than study destinations in Europe and America.
Australia's location also means that it is well placed to forge highly profitable trade connections with East Asian countries. Perth, which has the highest standard of living of any Australian city, shares a time zone with Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei, easing business interaction.
The proof of these benefits can be seen in the fact that Australia has enjoyed uninterrupted economic growth over the last twenty years, with an average annual growth of 3.3% in real GDP. All of this is in stark contrast to recession and eurozone woes in Europe.
However,
Australian graduate schools are now reaching out to talented MBA applicants outside of Australia to help continue this upward trajectory. Western Australia, heart of Australian economic growth, makes up a third of the continent, but only 10% of its population. Local skills shortages, coupled with wage and price increases, could put a stopper on the growth they're used to.
A Deloitte Access Economics report has predicted the mining boom will peak in 2014, and investment has slowed down, with only 25% of Australian companies are planning major capital expenditure projects this year, compared to 52% in 2011. Calls for skilled workers to help maintain growth should appeal to MBAs who are experiencing a slightly slower recruitment market in Europe and America.
Studying for an MBA from an Australian b-school is a great way to sample Australian life whilst getting ahead in the jobs market. Edith Cowan University, based in Perth, offers a flexible program which allows MBAs to attend classes at night. Students also benefit from intensive summer and winter school units on weekends. Their Perth Graduate School of Business is consistent in the top 10 of MBA rankings for Australia, and competitive globally.
But, of course, no-one will criticise you if you make the move to Australia to sample the world class beaches and vineyard, rather than ride the crest of an economic wave...
