Why Baptize Your Child?

Are you considering having your child baptized

? This is something that parents sometimes aren't sure of, but the Bible has a clear answer to this which I will explain here.

The Bible tells us that everyone is born with a sinful nature. While babies don't yet sin and willfully disobey the Lord as they are too young to understand, the sinful nature still belongs to all of us. As a result, all people need forgiveness from God through Jesus in order to enter his Kingdom one day. Baptism offers grace for infants and young children.

Jesus told his disciples that they should bring children and infants to

him to be baptized. In fact, he rebuked them when the disciples thought young children should not be included. This is confirmed in Luke 18 verses 15 to 17. In addition, there are many Scripture verses that tell us that baptism provides the forgiveness of sin and allows us to be members of the body of Christ. Acts 22:16 and Galations 3:27 make this clear. In Acts 2 verses 38 and 39, Peter tells people to repent, and that every one of them must be baptized so they can be forgiven for their sins and saved. Verse 39 in Acts indicates the promise applies to everyone, not just adults but children as well.

Because it is commanded in Scripture, baptism is following God's plan for us and assures the salvation for the child. Parents need to follow the Lord's will for themselves, as well as make the right decisions for their children. Parents regularly decide things for a child because the child isn't old enough to understand. This is true of baptism as well as other choices parents must make on their child's behalf.

Baptizing your child is a public declaration of your own faith. By doing so you are believing that all sins are forgiven according to what the Bible promises us. Making such a commitment with others as witnesses is pleasing to the Lord. In addition to having family and friends present, baptisms often take place in front of the church congregation. Those attending the baptism are supportive of the parents and their dedication to following God and doing His will. Baptism is the way everyone can be assured of being with the Lord one day. This includes both children and adults.

The hope the parents will have is that one day the child will believe in the Lord, and by faith they can trust in God that this will happen one day. Following God's command by baptizing the child and teaching him or her the Christian faith is the first step to take.

Of course, doing as God tells us to do is the most important reason for baptism. However, there are advantages to others for doing so. The baptism of a child is a happy day for celebration. Many family memories are created. If you have older children, this can be a time of encouragement and faith for them as well.

These are the reasons why baptism is so important for your child. We please the Lord when we obey Him, and it assures all sins have been forgiven.
