Why Big Sur Coast Highway is a Beautiful Road to Travel On

One of the most Beautiful Highways to drive on is Highway 1 which runs along the coast of California. It Starts From the South at Interstate 5 in Capistrano Beach and goes all the way up to the Redwood Empire. The Highway runs through some of the most Beautiful Coastline on planet earth especially in Central California between San Luis Obispo and Monterey. That Part of Highway 1 is Called Big Sur.

Last April I had the change to run the Big Sur Marathon which is one of the only times that they shut 26.2 miles of Highway 1 down for 6 hours to let people run on it. It is one of the most beautiful marathons that any marathoner can do in their life time. People from all over the Globe Come to run the Big Sur Marathon every April. It is ranked near Boston as being one of the best marathons to run.

The Day Before the Marathon, we wanted to drive the course to see what it was going to be like. It is a beautiful drive, but you really have to be careful since it is a 2 lane Highway. Starting from Pfeiffer Park in Big Sur From the South, We drove north bound downhill through the Redwood forest for three miles through River End and out to Malara then down through a two-Mile Straightaway. During that two-mile stretch, you will see cattle off to the sides. After the 2 mile Stretch, you will see the Point Sur light house off to your left.

A few miles After the Point Sur Lighthouse, you will begin to climb a windy hill called Hurricane Point, also known as Hurri Pain Point to the Big Sur Marathon Runners. At the top of the hill you will get an amazing view of the pacific ocean. We decided to pull over to the side of the road and get out of the car. However, it was so windy at the top of the hill that I almost lost my hat. It is usually very windy in the afternoon just to let you know.

We then drove down the hill towards the Bixby Bridge. The Bixby Bridge is a concrete arched bridge that was built in the 1930s and goes over a stream that runs into the ocean. The rest of the dive is very scenic all the way to the historic city of Carmel.

A Big Sur Road Trip is something that anyone should experience before they die. If you have not been out to that part of the world yet, it is something that you should consider putting on your buckett list.
