When a hacker gets into the membership section of a site, they are able to control the members of that site and use their information without the owners knowing it. Another reason why people hack into other people's membership sites is to get information that makes a competitor do better in the market hopefully and edit it to redirect attention to a market of a different genre. This is mainly done by people who want to attract an audience without working for it.

There are people who hack into membership sites as a challenge and just to confirm that they can do it even if a number of them do it for all the wrong reasons. These are computer geeks who spend all their time on the internet and have nothing else to do. They may not necessarily cause any harm to the membership site but the fact that they are there illegally is very uncomforting.
