Why Bullying?
Covers of magazines, newspaper headlines, and on-line news pages are littered
with photos, names and stories of children that are being bullied in schools,
neighborhoods, and on the internet. Is this a new phenomenon that is only
affecting this generation, or is this like so many other social epidemics
just being given the attention it has for so long deserved?
According to Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America, a 2005 report,
nearly two-thirds of middle and high school students say they have been
bullied in school in the last year. Many still question, however, if this
needs the attention it is getting from the press, school administrators,
parents, and even the federal government. Let me provide you with some
information that may make you think this truly is an epidemic that needs to
be addressed: Children who bully are more likely to get into fights,
vandalize, and drop out of school, and sixty percent of boys who were bullies
had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24 (Olweus, 1993). Beyond
that, more than 160,000 kids stay home from school each day to avoid
bullying, and when it all becomes too much some of these children are
tragically taking their own lives.
And it is for these reasons that I have chosen to jump on the, incredibly
necessary, anti-bullying bandwagon. I decided several years ago that it was
my calling to work to change the lives of kids. While, I never tagged my
message as anti-bullying I would argue that it has been that all along.
Teaching kids leadership and character skills is at the heart of putting an
end to bullying, but as I, and many of you have realized we must face it head
on, call it what it is, and address it now, because for some families it is
too late.
