Why Buy Artisan Jewelry? It is a question that I have been asked the question on many occasions. Perhaps this little analogy can give you a sense of what the answer is in my opinion:
You go to your local grocery store and grab a box of chocolate chips cookies and dump them unceremoniously into your cart. You get home, plop them down on the counter, and without even knowing it, devour the entire thing. Tasted like cardboard. Smelled like nothing. Crumbs are pretty much the only souvenir you had of the mass-produced, low-quality snack.
You gather the finest, freshest ingredients for chocolate chips cookies - exactly the same as the ones in the recipe passed down throughout your family. You lovingly measure, and combine these ingredients. Bake them just long enough (staring at the oven timer, bending over to check in the little window in the oven), so the very edges get golden brown...pull them out of the oven, basking in the seductive smell of vanilla and rich chocolate.
You cool them on a cooling rack - only long enough to be able to touch them, and bring them to your lips. And then - you nibble on the ooey-gooey delight you have just created. The fine melted chocolate satisfying your every sensory craving. You can practically taste the special love you added to make them "perfect". In my house, it's called "Momagic". And I am extremely generous with that ingredient in everything I do.
The difference between the two is enormous. And a great example of the difference between a mass-produced piece of jewelry from a chain-jeweler, and a piece lovingly created just for you. Who made that piece of jewelry you're wearing from a mall-jeweler? Was it a machine that cranked it out? Or maybe an anonymous face punching a clock, making the same exact piece, day after day, ad-nauseum? Mind off a million miles away, wondering what "corporate" is up to.
When you purchase a piece of handmade, or handcrafted, artisan jewelry, you are truly buying a piece of unique art. You are contributing to a passion - to a need to capture the beauty all around us in our world in a tangible form. I know each piece in my collection intimately. I know by heart every curve, every loop, each stroke of my hammer, every distinct gemstone and crystal. When I sell that piece, a piece of me truly goes with it - my love, my thoughts, my observations - at the wonder around us.
I wonder who will wear my art? Where they will wear it? What experiences they will have while they are wearing it? Just as each and every gemstone has its own story - its own history, so will they pieces of wearable artwork they are now a beautiful part of. Their history is now immortalized and on display on the fascinating people who understand the value of this art form.
True, the mass-produced selections can sometimes be cheaper - you get what you pay for. You pay for high mall rent, salaries, marketing, advertising, insurance, glossy fliers, TV and newspaper ads. You pay for it with every purchase. Your piece of jewelry becomes barely a part of the entire overhead cost.
As artisans, we are extremely in tune with the knowledge that people work long and work hard for their money - and we find it an extreme privilege to have you choose to invest in our artwork. I take special care to ensure that my particular pieces are very versatile, and while they are sparkly, I assure you they all go perfectly with the most casual of clothes, to make it a breeze to go from daytime to nighttime looks, casual to sophisticated. Again, this will save you on having to buy a bunch of inferior, cheap pieces, and allow you wear some of the best stuff on earth.
I am constantly adding new pieces to my site, and I invite and encourage you to stop by often and see what's available. Many times a piece has been sold out within an hour of being put on the site (as with my Tahitian pearls - more pieces are coming though), and the pieces are naturally removed once they are sold.
And now, HTB and I will settle back and enjoy some football (Go Giants!) - although he still has to pay up for losing our last bet;-). I wish for all of you an enjoyable Sunday afternoon!
Until Next Time,
Do Widzenia,
Victoria G.
P.S. Loving Hugs and Kisses to my four older daughters for doing incredibly well on their report cards, and a special hug and kiss for my littlest princess for giving up Barney in lieu of Harry Potter...
