Why Chair Massage?

However, despite my work to improve the standards and image of this profession

, I have what many of my massage therapy colleagues would consider a distasteful and objectionable obsession. I'm wildly passionate about...

...the simple back massage!

I'm referring to back rubs in massage chairs. Massage therapists think I'm wacky and wonder...

What's so special about chair massage?

I love seated chair massage because I really believe that it has potential to make massage accessible to everyone.

Industry surveys show massage utilization to be relatively low.

It hardly seems possible. You see massage in the media non-stop. You'd think that everyone gets massage.

If you squeeze a friend's neck and shoulders are they going to say, "Stop! Stop! I hate having my shoulders relaxed. It feels awful." That's very unlikely to happen because like everyone they love being massaged.

We definitely require touch to survive. That's why touch is tied into the pleasure centers in our brain. Every survival function is tied to those pleasure centers in our brains - as are sex and eating. Our nervous systems are wired to guarantee that we get what we require.

So we're built to receive touch and we love it. So if everybody needs it so badly and enjoys it, then why don't they get massage every day?

To answer that question you must look at table massage Put yourself in the consumer's place and look at your massage as though you're completely new to it all:

In order to get a massage treatment you have to go into a small room behind closed doors, get undressed taking off your clothing and lie prone on a massage table while someone you don't know massages greasy oil all over you. And as if that's not enough, you have to fork over a lot of money for the opportunity.

It bothers many other massage practitioners to think of massage therapy from a perspective like this, but mostly, that's the PUBLIC PERCEPTION or massage. When seen from that viewpoint, it looks as if the massage industry is intentionally looking to deter potential customers from utilizing massage therapy.

It's important to recognize the psychological blocks that really dissuade potential customers from getting Swedish massage. These are what we usually refer to as objections.

I've surveyed consumers and massage professionals on the question: Why don't people use massage regularly? In other words, what are the psychological barriers? You'd be surprised at the answers.
