Why Convert to a CNG Powered Vehicle?

CNG, or Compressed Natural Gas, is a type of fuel used as an alternative to traditional fuels, such as petrol, LPG or diesel cars. Considered more environmentally friendly, it is a viable alternative to the more conventional fossil fuels.

In basic terms, the gas is manufactured via an industrial process, which compresses naturally occurring methane, it is then stored in specialized containers that enable its transportation to filling stations.

CNG is often used in a fuel system that runs alongside a secondary fuel system (petrol) in motor cars and other types of vehicle. The vehicles have customary petrol internal combustion engines, but have two fuel tanks, a tank containing petrol, and another containing CNG mechanics fit the CNG tanks into the boot of the car during the vehicles conversion into a bi-fuel vehicle.

A switch inside the vehicle allows the driver to switch between fuel types manually although the operation of such engines is automatic with the car warming up using petrol, then switching to gas once warm. Nevertheless, the option is there for the driver if they choose, for one reason or another to use one fuel rather than the other.

Engines that run using two types of fuel are known as bi-fuel vehicles and are increasingly popular around the world. In 2009, estimations put the number of compressed natural gas cars at over eleven million and statistics indicate that this figure is set to rise significantly in view of the increasing costs of types of fossil fuel.

As a fuel system, it is extremely economical; it is significantly cheaper than other fuels, such as petrol and diesel. Not only is the fuel itself cheaper, but there are other financial benefits of owning a bi-fuel vehicle, for instance, they are much more likely to be exempt from congestion charges, as well as falling into lower car tax brackets. Running costs are extremely low with this type of fuel the engine runs much more efficiently and with fewer corrosive influences. Therefore, the vehicle needs less maintenance and parts last longer. Overall, as far as value for money is concerned, the bi-fuel car really is the future.

Evaporation could be a problem with the gas leaking from the fuel tank, but tanks are sealed using high-quality materials and gas does not spill or evaporate any more than it would from a normal petrol engine.

There are also far fewer mechanical problems occurring due to the deposit of various by-products from the combustion of petrol, for example, the spark plugs last longer in a gas converted car as there are far fewer lead deposits left over from combustion.

Additionally, petrol deposits do not leak into the oil and filtration systems to the same degree as a vehicle running on pure petrol, this means that lubrication oils last longer as they do not suffer from contamination.
