Why Diabetics Suffer Weight Gain

More than eight out of every ten diabetics also suffer from obesity

. Although obesity is a predisposing factor to developing diabetes, diabetics can also cause gain weight in different ways. Weight gain in diabetics significantly increases the risk for diabetic-related complications and greatly reduces the patients quality of life. Finding out the reasons why type 2 diabetics gain more weight can be of substantial value for diabetics in coming up with ways for effective weight control. Remember, weight control is an important piece to effectively managing your type 2 diabetes.

The causes of weight gain in diabetics all trickle down to more insulin in the body, may it be due to insulin resistance or insulin therapy.

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body compensates with the elevated blood sugar levels by producing more insulin. However the insulin is effectively utilized by the cells, resulting elevated insulin levels. More insulin in the body also causes more fat storage because insulin is a fat storing hormone. It stimulates the body to stock up energy in the form of fat.

Insulin therapy in the form of injections or pumps is aimed at stabilizing the high blood sugar levels. However, diabetics tend to eat more to prevent hypoglycemia. Insulin also causes increased feelings of hunger, eventually leading to more food intake. Additionally, this hormone slows down the rate of metabolism when the blood sugar levels are under control.

Reducing insulin levels in the body is crucial in preventing weight gain in diabetics. You can reduce insulin by eating a low-carbohydrate diet, as it signals the pancreas to produce lesser insulin. For diabetics on insulin therapy, consulting your doctors and health care providers about reducing insulin doses, especially in the cases when blood sugar is optimized, can decrease your chances of gaining weight. However, it is not advised to stop insulin therapy because it can lead uncontrolled elevation of blood sugar, which can damage the brain and kidneys.

Maintaining normal insulin levels in the body becomes more effective when done together with healthy diet and regular exercise. It does not just prevent weight gain, but also helps you manage diabetes more effectively. Consulting a dietician that specializes in diabetic nutrition can help you formulate a healthy diet for diabetes management. At the same time, having a personal trainer or an exercise coach of any kind, even if that coach comes in the form of a spouse or friend, can help create an appropriate exercise program to utilize blood sugar and burn unwanted fats.
