Many people get a pain in their ears when they fly
. But why does this happen?
On takeoff and landing many people get pain in their ears due to the quick change in altitude. This can be a very painful experience and effects different people in different ways. When I was much younger I experienced it to a painful extent on some flights, and other times it was less painful. Generally it seems to make a difference how quickly the ascent or descent is. With a fast ascenet, the pressure on the outside does enough have enough time to equalize with the pressure inside your head which causes the pain in your head. Whether travelling on flights from Rochester to Orlando or flights from Oakland to San Jose you will likely be effected in a very similar way.
Some people report that taking off from higher altitudes can help avoid the pain, or that having ear wax removed before taking a flight can reduce the pain associated with air travel. One of the ways to equalize the pressure in your ears is to suck a sweet. On some airline, especially near ski resorts where you may be more likely to be effected by altitude, for example on flights from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. Other things that are recommended is yawning and stretching. Both of these things can help alleviate the pain in your ears by equalize the pressure in the cabin with the pressure in your head.
For more information contact your doctor or medical provider. There are many more suggestions for comprehensive methods of dealing ear pain while travelling on the Internet. The most important thing to remember is that the ear pain is passing and does not indicate a medical condition that needs to worry you.
