Why Do People Choose Not to Drive Diesel Engine Cars?

You might have read a number of articles praising diesel engines for being very practical and efficient

. If that is the case, you might also be wondering how come people are driving more gasoline engine cars than that of the more practical diesel engine. In the course of automobile history, diesel engine cars never really caught the passenger car market. There are historical issues, aside from some other logical reasons why the market choose gasoline cars over diesel engines. Cars running on diesel engines might be very efficient when it comes to fuel consumption, but these cars tend to be noisier and produce more smoke. Unfortunately, despite that, most diesel engines are more expensive than those running on gasoline. Diesel engines have higher compression ratios than a typical gasoline car, and these tend to come heavier too. Because of the higher weight and compression ratios, these tend to have lower maximum RPM ranges than comparable gasoline engines, resulting to higher torque than horsepower, thus slower in acceleration. Diesel engines need to be fuel injected, but technology in the past was not that reliable and made fuel injection expensive. This also produced more smoke and had a funny smell. Another factor which did not take the diesel engine to the passenger car market is because diesel engines are nosier and would tend to vibrate. During cold weather, a diesel engine would be more difficult to start. For diesel engines that have glow plugs, you have to wait for these to heat up before you can start the engine. Moreover, since diesel fuel is not readily available, people also tend to prefer gasoline cars for convenience in refueling. Despite such disadvantages, many people still choose diesel engines for fuel economy. These engines also have longer life than gasoline driven engines. Such would translate to a large sum of savings as the longer the engine lasts, the more fuel savings you will accumulate. Such advantages eliminate all of the above-mentioned disadvantages of picking diesel engines over gasoline engines. Considering the higher acquisition cost of a diesel engine compared to that of a gasoline engine, there would be a need to prolong this engines life in order for fuel economy advantage to overcome the high purchase price. If you have a diesel engine car, it is therefore important for you to make sure that you will be able to properly maintain your car to prolong its engines life.
