Why Do People Smoke?

Why do you smoke? That simple question may be difficult to answer since different people have different reasons for smoking

Some believe that smoking is cool and makes them a part of a special crowd. Others are influenced by friends or family members and start smoking. Popular movies and TV shows that feature leading men or women who smoke are another reason why smoking is common.

But perhaps the best reason why people smoke - whether they admit it or not - is because tobacco contains nicotine - an addicting drug that works just like heroin. When people smoke, they become addicted to nicotine. Their mind and body is hooked on the drug that its hard to let go. For these addicts, life isnt normal without their daily nicotine fix - the reason why its so difficult to stop smoking.

But tobacco is not a vitamin or something that the body needs. Theres absolutely no reason to start smoking since nicotine is not as important as food, water, sleep, and exercise. Its actually a poison but its addictive nature prevents many people from quit smoking fast.

Initially, the body reacts to this poison. This explains why first time smokers experience a number of unpleasant symptoms. There is pain or burning in the throat and lungs, and some people may feel sick or throw up when they first try tobacco. These symptoms justify a fast quit.

Over time, as nicotine accumulates, it affects various parts of the body. The consequences of long-term tobacco poisoning include heart disease, stroke, emphysema (the breakdown of lung tissue), and various forms of cancer such as lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer. People who smoke are also easy prey to infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.

The many dangers of smoking should convince smokers to quit now. Fast stop smoking can be achieved if you put your heart and mind to it. Consult a doctor today for help in quitting and get more out of life.
