Why Do The Mobile Operators Charge So Much For Calls To Non Geographic Numbers?

Non geographic numbers are virtual numbers that are not attached to any particular geographic location

. They can be overlaid on top of any existing landline number and the calls made to the non geographic number can be received on ordinary telephone lines. The most common geographic numbers are the 08 numbers. 0800 numbers, 0845 numbers and 0844 numbers are the most ubiquitous with businesses because of the many benefits that they offer. 0800 numbers in particular are advertised as freephone numbers because to call an 0800 number, the caller does not have to pay anything. The entire cost of the call is borne by the customer.

But people who use mobile phones and call 0800 numbers may find that their mobile bills are increasing for no reason. They are often perplexed as to why this happens. The answer lies in the fact that the mobile network operator charges the caller for calls made to 0800 numbers from the mobile phone. The 0800 number calls are free only when they are made from fixed land lines.

To compound the problem, these calls are excluded from usual free bundled minutes that are usually offered as part of many mobile packages. Since media reports started describing 08 numbers as premium numbers, there was confusion all around. In 2008, Ofcom published a report showing that British customers spent around 88 million on calls to 0800 numbers from mobile phones. This is not justified when mobile operators already get paid for the calls by the 0800 number owner.

But just why do the mobile operators charge so high for calls made to 0800 numbers? The argument that the costs of making and receiving calls over the mobile network is typically higher than those for calls made over fixed networks no longer carries much weight, but it has been used for 25 years as justification by many mobile operators to charge more for calls to freephone numbers and add significant margin (in some cases up to 2,000%) on calls to other 08 ranges.

The solution to all these problems is the 03 number range. Calls made to 03 numbers cost the same amount as calls to standard geographic numbers and calls made to these numbers from mobile and fixed lines must be included in any inclusive bundled minutes.
