Why Do We Work?

Why Do We Work?

Why Do We Work?

This is a very serious question. Indeed, it is a grave one. Please spend a moment to calculate roughly what proportion of your life you spend at work. Then calculate how much of your life you spend sleeping. Finally, figure out what's left over and what you do with it. Your state of mind is unquestionably the most important thing of all, because it determines precisely the quality of your life.

Please sit back and think. Do you enjoy work? Sure, work is hard and personally I have no problem with that at all. I can sometimes work 10-12 hour days and not mind it a bit. As a matter of fact, today is my day off but I'm working. The point is, I enjoy what I do and that I do believe is crucial. Because I think that if you hate what you do, you shouldn't be doing it.

Some might interject at this point, "But I have to work. I have bills to pay and children to raise." And you know, I totally sympathize with that and I can relate to that in full. In fact, I have two children of my own that I'm keen on sending off to college someday. But you know, as far as the money goes, I don't need a grand ol' mansion with all of the fixings to send them off to the finest college money can buy (we're a tad more humble around here), and I don't need to send myself to college either. So I guess I'd reiterate, if you hate what you do, you probably shouldn't be doing it. I wouldn't. As far as kids and college go, I'm sure your familiar with the old adage 'love will find a way?' If you really want to send your child to college, you will.

As far as retirement goes, people are always advising me quite earnestly to save up for it. That's a good idea I suppose. But you know what? I like to save just for the sake of saving. It never hurts anyone to save. If all the money I save now ends being spent for retirement, that's fine. I'm not worried about it. Save a penny- it will grow!
