During tough economic times it's more likely that you will be a victim of identity theft as people are more desperate to steal people's money from their accounts or get fake credit cards and loans. One way of avoiding this problem is to shred your documents.

In most areas there is not a law against what is called dumpster diving. Dumpster diving is the process where people attempt to salvage things that are thrown away. For some there is quite a bit of usable items like furniture, clothing, and other items that can be taken out of the trash and used effectively. Others who dumpster dive do so to find personal papers and other information. With even a handful of mail, it can be easy to get enough personal information to steal someone's identity depending on what's in it. You shouldn't take this chance and hope your information will remain safe.

Get yourself a small shredder which will be less than $50. Make sure to shred all your mail regardless if you open it or not. With all the credit card offers, it would be too easy for someone to try to be you and get this type of credit for themselves. Be sure to shred checks and credit cards as well if getting rid of them.

If you are a business shredding can be an advantage as well. From time to time laws change about what should be shredded. If you get into the habit of shredding everything that is thrown away, even though it takes some time, it's easier than keeping up with which papers should technically be shredded and which ones should not.

Shredding documents is a simple way to keep your personal information safe and protect yourself and your business. It is a little task that can really make a difference.
