Islam is a controversial religion for its traditions, practices, and influences, hence the amount of hate and discrimination against Islam. There are many forms of discrimination against Muslims like violence and stereotypes, and the word to describe that discrimination and hate is Islamophobia. Islamophobia originates from a lot of different reasons, but mainly ignorance, lack of information, and biased media coverage.

Islamophobia is an issue that came out of existence right when Islam became main stream around the world. It started with the Crusades against Islam, and so forth after that, many wars and conflicts against Islam became common. To me, one of the main reasons that Islamophobia happens, is that Islamophobia is the result of pure ignorance, in the fact that there is not enough education about the Muslim faith and culture, even though it is the fastest growing religion in the world and one of the biggest faiths compared to Christianity and Judaism. The lack of education is to blame for people making false judgments about the whole faith of Islam from a few "terroristic" individuals that seem to want to kill everyone, including other Muslims. This lack of information along with a misunderstanding of Islamic culture creates an unpleasant atmosphere for Muslims in America and all around the world.

The problem has gotten particularly worse after the attacks of September 11, 2001, because a media misconception of Islam made Muslims the "attackers" or the "enemy" of America. From personal experience, it was the 9/11 attack that really gave the anti-Islamic movement power, and started a stronger systematic and focused approach of Islamophobia. This "new" type of Islamophobia contained a movement against Islam through the media, movies, politics, jobs, and societal awareness. Islamophobia is a social problem because it causes negative consequences for all Muslims and creates a feeling of hate for everyone around Islam.
