, you also need to have the luggage that goes through the hold scanned by airport officials. Most people forget about this, but it's just as important a security procedure as any part of the body scanning thing.

It's important to have luggage scanned because in the past people have tried to smuggle bombs on board planes using their hold luggage as well as their hand luggage, their shoes and their pants in the past. On every flight, even short flights from San Francisco to Colorado Springs luggage will be scanned. And this isn't just a measure intended to help fight terrorism. Long before terrorism and hijackings were assumed to be a problem to the aviation industry it was a problem when people would take things in the air that wouldn't be able to handle the change in pressure. Gas canisters for example, or ammunition can never be taken in the hold.

In order to protect passenger, airline authorities therefore need to scan everything. Unlike hand luggage it's unusual that security officials will deem a piece of baggage to be a risk and subsequently have to remove it from the plane, but this does happen. Your hand baggage gets scanned for more obvious reason. Without the scan it would be very easy to smuggle drugs on board, or to bring a knife that could be used to hijack the plane.

So you baggage gets scanned so that passengers on flights from Los Angeles to Dublin or on flights from Washington to Madison remain safe, and it's very difficult to argue with that reasoning. When it comes to scanning someone's who body or giving them an invasive "enhanced pat down," it's another question altogether, and one about personal freedom than mere security.
