Why Every Honolulu Vacation Should Include a Luau

Why Every Honolulu Vacation Should Include a Luau

If you are planning a trip to Honolulu, you should definitely include a luau as part of your overall experience. Missing a luau would be like going to Niagara Falls and only visiting the museums. The history of the luau dates back to ancient times when women and men ate separately; women and commoners were forbidden to eat certain delicacies. In 1819 King Kamehameha II abolished this religious tradition and designed a feast that had men and women eating together with the King. The luau was born and has existed ever since.

The focal point of every luau of course is the feast that is prepared. There is seemingly no end to the delicious array of meat, tropical fruits, vegetables and Mai Tai's. A traditional luau consists of roast pig, salmon, chicken, pineapple, mango, papaya, sweet potatoes and poi. You may want to eat lightly during the day so you will have a sufficient appetite for this wonderful feast. It is a buffet style dinner so you will be able to try a little bit of everything.

There are other activities that you can participate in at a luau besides eating. Most luaus will also include shows, complete with fire, acrobatics and traditional Hawaiian dance, such as the Samoan fire knife dance. You can even participate in island games, buy traditional items from the arts and crafts show, or just go for a walk along the beach while listening to the soothing sounds of the traditional Polynesian drums.

Plan to be at your luau for at least four hours. You won't be disappointed and you will never be bored. You will end the evening with new knowledge of the rich Hawaiian history and culture and gain a deeper understanding and respect for its people. It truly is an unforgettable experience.

There are several luaus that take place all over the island but one of the most recommended is the Paradise Cove luau. Talk to your travel agent before you go and find out if there is a luau included in your package. They may be able to suggest one that suits your needs. All luaus are family friendly so it is a great night out for the kids too. If your travel package doesn't include this or you want to go to more than one, they are usually anywhere from $70 - $130 U.S. per person. Honolulu just might be the best vacation you've ever taken.
