Why Extended Validation Certificate?

A key motivation for using digital certificates with SSL has been to add trust for

online transactions requiring Web site operators to undertake vetting with a certification authority (CA) in order to obtain an SSL certificate. However, commercial pressures have led some digital certification authorities' to introduce "domain-only validation" SSL certificates for which a minimum check is performed in the certificate.

Most browsers do not differentiate clearly between low-validation certificates and those who have suffered a stronger vetting. Since any SSL connection causes the padlock icon, users are not likely to be aware of the issue of whether or not the owner of the Web site has been validated. Therefore, fraudsters (including phishing websites) began to use SSL to add credibility collected on their websites.

Criteria for issuing:

Only the certificate authorities who pass an independent audit as part of their WebTrust (or equivalent) revision can offer EV, and all worldwide certification authorities must follow the same emission requirements detailed aimed at:

Establish legal identity and the physical presence of the owner of the website

Establish that the applicant is the owner of the domain name or that it has exclusive control over the domain

Verify the identity and authority of the persons acting for the owner of the website, and that the documents related to legal obligations are signed by an authorized officer.

Advantages:

Browsers will be clearly identifying your website to your customers at any time; they know who they do business with.

Browsers will show that you have been verified by authorized provider of trust, EV by exhibiting the name of the SSL Certificate Authority who issued the EV SSL Certificate.

Your customers will know right away if they are redirected from a genuine EV site to a bogus phishing site, as it will no longer display as trusted green bar.
