Why Ganesha Chose A Mouse As His Vehicle ?

Lord Ganesha, the big elephant-headed God with huge ears and a pot belly is believed to have chosen a small mouse as his vehicle

. In the earliest images of Ganesha, there seemed no vahana (vehicle) owned by him. But during the 7th century, most of the sculptures in central and western India displayed the mouse as his crucial means of transportation. But the question arises as to why Ganesha chose a tiny mouse, something that is probably 1/100th of his size, as his principal vehicle. A number of anecdotes in Indian mythology shed light on what this represents.

According to Indian mythology, a likely reason for Ganesha picking a mouse as his vehicle was to maintain his image as the Conqueror of Obstacles. When agriculture was the most important means of survival in the ancient times, rodents caused a lot of trouble to farmers. They would destroy all the crops and this would cause a huge loss to the common man. Lord Ganesha chose a mouse as his vehicle to show that he has conquered the pest.

According to Ganesha Purana, one of the sources for mythological stories, in the court of Lord Indra, Krauncha, the musician-God, accidentally stepped on Muni Vamadevas foot while he was engrossed in meditation. Muni Vamadeva was a powerful sage and was enraged by Kraunchas mistake. Hence, he cursed Krauncha to become a massive, mountain-sized mouse. This mouse ended up destroying everything that came its way. Ganesha took it upon himself to capture the mouse. He captured the mouse with his glorious noose or the pasha, which chased Krauncha and looped around his neck. However he decided to forgive the mouse by making it his vehicle.

Another belief revolves around the fact that a tiny mouse can effortlessly slither through holes and narrow passages, even when its dark. Ganesha, with the help of a mouse could easily fulfil his duties as the Destroyer of Obstacles. This helped Ganesha in all his ventures.

Ganesha riding a mouse also represents how once can achieve a lot, with limited means. His travels around the world, on a mouse signify how you can leverage what you have to achieve great feats. Often there will be a constraint of resources, but Ganesha teaches us to use what we have, and not compromise on ambition or results. the joy you get when you earn much more than youve spent is immeasurable.

In most representations of Ganesha in Indian mythology, the mouse and Ganesha are inseparable. It is almost as if Ganeshas powers are incomplete without his mooshika vahana (mouse vehicle).
