Anyone who watches the television or listens to the radio as the UK gets ready for

the Easter holidays will know all about the stories which appear every year about long delays at airports and ports.

This now-annual phenomenon is unsurprising, given that it's one of only three periods in the year when the children are guaranteed at least two school-free weeks. So many families take that as a cue to go abroad, probably in search of some much-needed sun after the winter just past.

There's a lot to be said for taking the first big opportunity for a family to spend a decent length of time together, away from the day-to-day concerns which dominate everyone's lives. But as economic conditions abroad continue to look ever-more uncertain, there's no telling when particular European governments might seize the opportunity to make some much-needed extra money out of their foreign visitors by imposing new charges, and struggling business up their prices to make up for the loss in income from struggling native customers.

All this makes a holiday at home in the UK look ever-more attractive for 2012, and considering that this country was one of the pioneers in so many different types of family holidays, it could be time to take a fresh look at just what's on offer.

When the Easter weather in the UK is good, it often catches people unawares, and means that the scope of what they can do together with their family is limited. But there are certain holiday options where hedging your bets on the weather can pay dividends.

A family holiday resort, for example, is carefully planned and designed to offer attractions and activities which don't depend on the weather. Indoor pools and games complexes combine with outdoor funfairs and sporting activities to ensure that even cold, wet days can be fun, and when the sun does shine, there's no excuse to stay indoors.

Doing this on its own could be expensive, but when so many of these extra activities are included in the price which has already been paid for the family to enjoy some time together, it would be crazy not to take advantage of them.
