Why Goals Fail
Lets be honest, we have all set goals that have failed
. You set goals with aspirations of completing them. You stand tall and confident at the beginning envisioning the successful outcome. You may write them down and post them in a very eye popping location to help remind you each day of the goal(s) that you set. So why do so many people today set goals but fall short of achieving them on a regular basis?
When we set goals there are a few fundamental rules that need to be adhered to in order to fully set yourself up for success.
1. No ambiguous goals. Setting a goal of losing weight, or you are going to start go to the gym leaves entirely too much room for the rational side of your brain to make excuses and get off track. How are you going to lose weight? What
diet are you going to go on? How are you going to shop differently? Who will hold you accountable? How many days a week will you go to the gym? What time will you go to the gym? What routines and what time frame will you be there? Setting very clear detailed goals will help the rational and emotional sides of your brain follow them.
2. Set action triggers. Action triggers are basically put into place so that your brain can go on auto pilot. An examples of an action trigger is brushing your teeth. You just do it, hardly have to think about it and more than likely have a specific time at which you do it. So whatever goals you set try to create action triggers, this will minimize the work your brain will have to do. So if going to the gym is your goal, set out your workout clothes the night before, or establish a specific time you will go each day.
3. Give yourself a break. 100% all the time will burn you out eventually. Try the 80/20 rule. Be strict and dedicated 80% of the time. 20% of the time, enjoy yourself within reason.
4. If your goals feel too large and overwhelming, shrink them. Instead of setting a goal of going to the
gym 5 days in one week, minimize it to going today, then going tomorrow, etc. What can you accomplish that day?
5. Know up front that you will go through three main phases of achieving a goal. An example would be to lose 20 pounds or run a marathon. At first you will be determined, strong, and set out to achieve your goal. The longer the process the more likely you will hit a valley. At this point you will feel as if you are failing, or lose your motivation. This is the critical point. You may feel like giving up but keep the motivation going. The last phase is you completed your goal.
6. Find someone or many to hold you accountable. There is strength in numbers. Create your goals with others to help a community environment blossom.
With any goal make sure it is something you truly want to accomplish. Setting goals that do not trigger an emotional reaction are set up to fail. Goals need to be tied into your passions.
