Why Gynecology Is Important
To most women, they know exactly what gynecology is
. After all, women usually have to deal with partaking in regularly scheduled gynecology appointments to make sure everything is alright. But there may be some who don't quite understand what gynecology really is. Here is the definition of gynecology in a nutshell.
Gynecology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases and disorders that affect the female reproductive system.
But did you know that most gynecologists are also obstetricians as well? This is true, but normally, the speciality of the obstetrics is limited to caring for pregnant women and dealing with the delivery of infants.
Good
gynecologic care is important, because, when a woman goes in for her annual visits, they are helping to identify any potential health problems that a woman may have. This is usually a great way to detect these problem at the earliest possible stage. It's always better to identify these problems before they get out of hand and potentially become a dangerous problem. It's recommended that a woman comes in for her exams when she is either turns 21, or is sexually active.
Although there are some male gynecologists, you will usually find mostly female physicians working in the field of gynecology and obstetrics. Because obstetrics and gynecology deals with sensitive female issues, some patients prefer that they have a female physician. It all depends on the woman's sense of modesty and propriety.
When coming in for an exam, there are usually some basic things that happen during your appointment with your physician. Once the physician has started the exam, you will spend some time talking about your overall medical history. Are you experiencing anything odd, any issues or problems? If so, it's ok to tell your physician. That's what they're there for. You will be able to ask questions that concern you about any female problems or concerns you may have. There are many different things that you can ask or talk about, such as birth control, contraception, infections, menopause, menstrual irregularities, STDs, or any other problem or issue that concerns you.
There are a couple other specialized tests that can be done as a woman grows older and has a developing health concerns. One such test is an Osteoporosis screening. Osteoporosis is a disease that will rob the bones in your body of strength, causing them to have an easier time of becoming fragile and easier to break. Breast cancer screening is another very important test to partake in, especially for those who are 40 and older. It's recommended that an annual MRI for women who are at high risk be done every year.
