Article Marketing Works In Two Ways
This is something that a lot of people fail to realize. In my opinion, people are less productive when they set their sights on a monetary goal only. When you submit 30 articles to directories for the sake of only building backlinks, that is all that it is really going to do for you. Amongst everything else, one of the most important parts of SEO is establishing yourself as an expert in your niche. Submitting articles to the various directories online is the perfect way to do just that. As a by product of this, you will earn backlinks.
It's no hidden fact that most article directories are of a high PageRank, meaning that if your name is attached to your articles (remember to set up a profile!), when people Google certain topics that you write about, they are going to see you, and learn more about you. Now, don't go and churn out garbage for the sake of building backlinks, this is definitely the wrong way to go about things, instead, write good high quality informative articles that identify you as "the go to guy" for your niche or topic.
If you focus your article marketing strategy on this baseline, instead of going for gold (backlinks) the whole time, you are going to find more occurrences of your articles being republished elsewhere, backlink included. Remember, when you submit an article to these online directories, everything else comes naturally, you just need to sit and wait for webmasters to republish your work.
Of course there are many other methods of marketing the articles that you write, including blog networks such as AMA and Portal Blog Feeder, however some of these may be slightly grey hat, so care is always going to be needed. In all cases, you will be spreading your work far and wide, and always have the opportunity to attach your name to your work, further identifying yourself as an authority within your niche.
Going To Hard And Too Fast
I completely understand, some of us just love to write articles. Personally, I could easily sit here for hours on end and write articles all day, however, building backlinks too fast can be quite dangerous. Google ranks websites on what appears as natural, so if 2000 backlinks suddenly appeared within the space of a week, you could easily be penalized by Google for your efforts.

The golden rule that you should incorporate into your article marketing strategy is this. Don't be over promotional. First, this looks unprofessional (leave it for your author credit box), and generally will result in an article not being republished anywhere as much as you would like. Second, a lot of the major directories will not approve articles such as these as they are against terms and conditions. Be aware of this. The main key at the end of the day is to have a repeatable process that works for your niche, and of all importance, never stop writing.
