The photovoltaics system (PV) is one of the two basic methods of converting solar energy to electricity, the other being solar dynamic (SD) conversion.

With the cost of electricity nowadays, not to mention the frequent power outages, people have found innovative alternatives of generating electricity. PV works by way of photovoltaic effect wherein electrons are knocked by light photons into higher energy states thereby producing electricity.

The PV system has become popular in generating direct current (DC) electricity from solar radiation by the solar photovoltaic cells it contains. Because of its efficiency, the production of PV continues to increase. Also because of various advancements in the technology, cost has more or less decreased. Because of this, photovoltaics systems have also become common in homes.

Home photovoltaics system consists of cells connected together to form modules popularly known as solar panels. One panel produces enough electricity to power an emergency telephone. These panels are then arranged in arrays and are usually mounted on the roof. The orientation of the arrays depends on which orientation favors maximum collection of sunlight. This is then connected by water- and sunlight-resistant cables to an inverter inside the home which converts DC power into alternating current (AC) power. When the system generates excess electricity, this is stored in batteries for later use. The system is also equipped with a charge controller to prevent overcharging of batteries and to prolong their life. For grid-tied PV systems, when excess electricity is produced than what is actually consumed in the household, the utility meter spins backward, reducing the billing credit.

Although such systems are still costly to purchase, it allows people to save in the long term. More and more businesses have invested in PV systems. It also offers an eco friendly solution to the demands of electricity. Furthermore, the use of renewable energy sources reduces the effects of greenhouse gases in the phenomenon of global warming and is pollution free.

Home photovoltaics system is covered by state laws such as net-metering law necessitating electric companies to buy the surplus electricity produced. Be sure to know about these laws and codes before having one installed in your own homes.
