Why Is In Vitro Maturation Different From Ivf And Should You Consider It?

If you are considering IVF to overcome your infertility problem

, you should also be aware of in vitro maturation. In vitro maturation is a technology that encompasses IVF, but uses a laboratory technology to simplify the IVF process for the patient.

Only mature eggs can be fertilized. In fact, an egg is defined to be mature if it is (morphologically) capable of being fertilized. The eggs that a woman creates before she is born and keeps safe until she can use them, are all immature. The process of an IVF cycle involves treating a woman with high does of medications for about two weeks in order to enable a large number of eggs to mature in her ovaries. They can then be harvested and fertilized outside of her body.

The process of an in vitro maturation cycle or an IVM cycle involves harvesting the eggs from a womans body that can be found in the small (2-10 mm) unstimulated cysts in her ovaries. Such small cysts are naturally found in the ovaries of a reproductive aged woman. These immature eggs are then cultured and matured in the laboratory. At least half of the eggs obtained this way will become mature. These mature eggs can then be fertilized using the tools of a conventional IVF cycle.

Once the eggs are fertilized, an IVM cycle precedes much like a conventional IVF cycle with embryo assessment and transfer of the best embryos. Patients who are good candidates for IVM appear as likely to get pregnant as they would have with conventional IVF, based on our experience.

For most women, the unpleasant part of IVF is the use of high dose medications to stimulate the ovaries and the blood tests required to monitor their response to this medication. The process of IVM is more natural. In addition to avoiding the side effects of taking the medications, much of the monitoring used for IVF can be avoided.

The other painful part of IVF is the cost. Although laboratory costs are similar since in vitro maturation utilizes laboratory technology that is similar to IVF, not using high doses of injectible medications and not requiring the same intensive monitoring with blood tests saves thousands of dollars.
