Why Is India A Backpacking Hotspot?

India is a well-known favorite with those backpacking

. A handful of the reasons to go there include: to become more independent; to learn about cultures different to your own; to make new friends; to enjoy yourself.

In the six months that most tourist visas allow, you can backpack extensively, yet still feel as though you only saw a small part of the country and its cultures. As a matter of fact, India is so huge that you could spend years there and still not see half of it.

You can find Hindu temples, Rajasthani palaces, holy cities, breathtaking mountain views and beautiful Himalayan valleys. Keep a sense of adventure in mind though and do not overly plan before your arrival; just make a short list of things to do and places to see.

Even though prices have risen slightly in the past few years, and tourism in India is increasingly aimed in favor of the middle classes, it is still possible to find accommodation on the beach for around 200 Indian Rupees per night.

It is also possible to eat out in the country for just a couple of US Dollars per day, particularly if you dine at the same establishments as the locals. However, prices increase in places that cater for backpackers, and western food is nearly always more expensive than Indian food.

India is accommodating to backpackers and, though journeys can take longer than expected, it is easy enough to travel around. It is relatively safe too, so long as you use common sense and show respect for the locals. Most travelers there travel on a route that has been traveled by thousands of other travelers in the past and, as a result, there are lots of services tailored especially towards the backpacker market.

Local travel agents are readily available on popular routes and can be used for arranging day trips, visas and flights. Overnight buses and sleeper trains are ideal for backpackers and offer an inexpensive method of covering moderate distances. Long in-country distances can be covered by using internal / domestic flights, which are mostly cheap, dependable and are bookable on the day.

Backpacking in India is never boring and you will constantly have something to phone to your friends and family about, particularly if you venture away from the backpacker hotspots and are determined to discover India outside the most popular destinations. Then you will feel more like a traveler, and less like a tourist.
