Why is it Important to Forgive?
We always hear about how we should forgive others for their transgressions against us and we should. When we hear about forgiveness it is sometimes used like a mantra. We are constantly beat across the head and shoulders with this concept as if it were a law that you will be fined for if you dont do it. The way that we normally think about forgiveness is not exactly the way that it really works.
Yes it is imperative that we learn how to forgive others but the real reason that we need to do so is because it hinders us in our relationship and our spiritual growth if we dont. Forgiveness is for you. It has no bearing on the other person or what they have done. If it were about the other person it would tell them to be sorry for what they have done. Whether they are troubled by their conscious or not the imperative is on you. You need to forgive them whether they deserve it or not.
Negative feelings that we hold onto only hurt us. They keep our mind in a state where we are no good to anyone and they hinder our relationship with God. If I hold on to feelings of unforgiveness for too long a period of time it will turn into bitterness. Bitterness will affect my relationships with all that I come into contact with and it will eventually drive me to a place of being irrational with myself. It can even manifest itself in sickness and eventual death.
The bible tells us that a right relationship with God is when we love him above all things. If we want to maintain that daily fellowship with him we should keep our minds on him. Bitterness will get in the way and take up the space in our hearts that rightfully belongs to him. He cant share a place in a heart which is filled with bitterness. Eventually one of them will have to leave. We can either hold on to our bitterness or hold onto God.
This is the reason that the bible says that if we dont forgive our fellow man God cant forgive us. He cant forgive us because we chose to hold onto bitterness rather than to hold onto him. Forgiveness doesnt vindicate an offender it vindicates you. The offender will have to change his or her ways in order to be vindicated but that really has nothing to do with you. The offender has to stand for himself before God for his actions. He or she doesnt owe an explanation to you.
If you have been wronged to the point that you are having a hard time getting over it here is something that might help. It is easier to forgive when you dont assign the blame for what happened to you to the person that did it. Remember that there is God and Satan and Satan uses people to do his will also. Anything wrong which was done to you through another person is because that person was used by Satan. Assign the blame to him and just remember that the person that he used wasnt strong enough to resist his promptings. Maybe this is the reason that the bible tells us to pray for them who despitefully use us. We need to pray for them to have strength to resist the promptings of Satan. We know that as far as Satan is concerned he will get his punishment so lets not fret over what he does and the fate in store for him.
It takes a really mature person of God to walk in the spirit of forgiveness. Lets make forgiveness an automatic thing.
