Why Is It Important To Replace Broken Headlights And Taillights?

It's easier than you might think to smash a headlight or taillight on your car

. You might reverse into a parking space in the dark and not see a pillar or rail sticking out ready to crunch into your taillight. You might even fall victim to a vandal who decides it would be good fun to smash your headlight for you through sheer boredom. These things happen, but the question is why you should act to replace them as quickly as possible.

Replace or repair?

Is it necessary to replace your headlight or taillight completely? The answer to this question depends on how badly the light has been damaged. Clearly, if the bulb has been smashed you will need to replace it. If you don't do so, you could be stopped by the police and asked to replace it. You might even get a ticket if you're really unlucky. The same applies to the actual casing around the bulb. If half of it is missing and the other half is in tiny shards, you're not going to be able to do a proper repair job. However, you might occasionally get lucky and find that your taillight is merely scratched or cracked. If this is the case a minor repair job may be all that is needed to repair it sufficiently.

Safety First

Another important thing to think about if you do have a smashed headlight or taillight is that it will reduce your level of safety on the road today. Just imagine for a moment that you have a broken headlight, thereby reducing you to just one headlight on your car. Now imagine you have a journey to make in the next few days that will mean you have to travel down a dark unlit road with just one headlight working. If the headlight is facing the center of the road you might think this wouldn't be a problem. Supposing there is a cyclist riding near the curb and you don't see them, all because your light on that side of your vehicle isn't working? You can see just how vital it is to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Some people elect to fix a broken light themselves. If you aren't experienced in auto repairs, it is usually faster and easier to get a garage to fix it for you. They'll charge for their time as well as for the light of course, but they'll also do a professional job that you can rely on. If your time is precious, it's usually best to get the experts in rather than to do anything else.

In the end, it doesn't matter how the headlight or taillight got broken in the first place. It is important to get it mended as soon as you possibly can. You should certainly try and get it fixed before you head out onto the road; otherwise, a cop might spot you and ask why you have a broken light in the first place.
