Why Is The World Cup So Great?

Why is the Football World Cup the greatest sporting event in the world

? What is about it that makes the world stop and glued to the television for a month every four years? Is it bigger than the Olympics? What does it possess that other sporting events don't have?

The answer to the greatness of the Football World Cup begins with football or soccer. Soccer is a very simple game to understand. Regardless of where you are from in the world, how old you are or what gender you are you pretty much understand the rules to soccer. There aren't many other sports you can say this about.

So when it comes to any other sporting event many people in the world simply have no appreciation for that sport. They don't understand it and the whole event could come and go without them even having known about it. That is why they aren't as big as the World Cup.

Even the Olympics isn't as big as it and for the some reason. There are 32 sports at the Olympics and not all of them apply to people in every corner of the world. Some don't care for fencing, some don't know anything about wrestling and some couldn't care less for baseball. That is just the reality of life.

People may not understand this but take something like the World Series of Poker or a big bingo tournament. For people in the bingo world this could be massive and what happens there could be the biggest news in bingo for a number of years but some people just don't care for that. This isn't the case with the World Cup.

Even if your country isn't competing in the finals, there is still going to be wall to wall coverage. Only 32 teams do make the finals which in the scheme of things isn't that many. In 1982 it was only 24 and it was this many until 1998 when it expanded to the 32 it is today. It would be difficult to expand it any more.

The matches also feature the world's very best player; players who are household names. After seeing them all play for their respective club sides it is exciting to see them come together to represent their country. You have the grace of Brazil, the flair of Italy and the passion of Spain. Every country that is competing brings its own style and culture to the game.

If there was one question mark about the World Cup and its ability to be truly global it was the USA. While football in the USA has a massive grassroots following there wasn't really the media coverage. It couldn't get past baseball and basketball. Now this has changed and there is massive World Cup coverage in the States.

This is an issue even less because of the amount of ex-pats living there. Whether it is Mexicans, Greeks or Serbs, every country in the world has pockets living in the States. They will cheer on their country. As will the Americans who are scattered around the world.
