There seems to be a growing demand for healthcare IT consultants among medical practices

. More physicians and doctors as well as small to mid-size medical firms are looking at adopting the services of healthcare IT professionals. As healthcare organizations are gearing towards harnessing the potential of EHR systems, it is becoming increasingly important for them to consult the services of skilled healthcare professionals. As per the new report from the research firm KLAS, 118 healthcare providers were interviewed out of which almost 70% expected to hire the service of healthcare consultants and healthcare software development teams.

With a growing demand for healthcare software development, it is not surprising that healthcare consultants are being hired because it is them who help bridge the gap between the physicians and healthcare application development platform. It is the healthcare consultants that provide the requisite guidance and training to understand the workings of a particular healthcare system and also help in maintaining and managing the system in the long run.

According to Mike Smith, the general manager of financial and services research for KLAS, 'the healthcare IT professional services landscape has changed dramatically in the last three years'. According to him the change has not only come in the increasing demand for healthcare consultants but also in the nature of the role required for these consultants. Earlier, most of the big medical practices were involved with the implementation of healthcare application development and therefore healthcare consultants were hired to look after the implementation phase. Since that particular phase is over, the nature of services has also changed because now the focus is on targeted activities and engagements rather than large-scale deployments.

It wouldn't be incorrect to say that medical establishments are now requiring more specialized services from healthcare consultants. They are now focusing on the core activities that not only include the smooth functioning of the system but also the overall management so that healthcare software development can further enhance the productivity levels and provide better care to patients.

This particular survey that KLAS conducted also depicted the consulting firms that medical providers were considering for hiring specialized healthcare consulting services. One of the names that featured prominently was CSC, which has literally moved from bottom to the top layer in 2010. Vitalize is second in number followed by Dell Perot. Another aspect that needs to be categorically mentioned is the fact that most of these healthcare firms are looking to hire healthcare consultants and are also willing to outsource this requirement. Healthcare establishments seem open to the idea of outsourcing not only healthcare application development and implementation but also managing and ensuring a smooth functioning of the software through hiring of healthcare consultants.

Hence, this study is definitely reflective of the growing trend in the demand for healthcare consultants that are required not only at the development and implementation stage but also later to help with the functioning and streamlining of healthcare processes. As, doctors and physicians are embracing the idea of implementing EHR systems, so is the demand for healthcare consultants increasing within the medical fraternity.
