A healthy amount of stress in our life can propel us to greater heights and achievements
, however, what level of stress is enough in your life before it kills you? The truth is stress can bring about more negative effects in our health than positive one, not only it will affect us mentally, it can also affect our health negatively! Thus this article will talk about why it is important to handle them effectively before they eventually kill you.
Besides affecting your mental health, here are some other ways that excessive stress can kill you:
When stress is present in our body, it will trigger a fight of flight mode in us which will change our physiology and triggers hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline and endorphins. Your heart rate will increase on the expense on the other parts of your organs which your body would not deem as important. While this is important in the past where we were still cave man, it is less important in our modern day society.
After our perceived threat is over, then the body will proceed to repair tissues that were damaged during the first stage, which is known as the stress resistance. Although we are no longer in the fight or flight mode anymore, the body will still be in an alert mode but the rest of the body function will resume.
The final stage we go through in stress is called the stress exhaustion stage; this is the stage where it can be potentially harmful to the body especially if you are required to go through it often. Since the immune system is overloaded with chemicals, it will cause significant strain in our cardiovascular system.
This explains why sometimes cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, heart diseases and strokes are most commonly linked to high level of stress. It can also weaken our immune system and as such can lead to us falling sick more often and the formation of stomach ulcers.
Other notable ways it can affects our body are headaches and body aches, it can also alter your sleeping pattern altogether. On top of that, a drop in sexual desire and performance are also commonly reported and linked to stress.
Another extremely dangerous way stress can affect us in terms of health is that it escalates any pre existing condition especially conditions that involves the nervous system. Bowel disorders, digestive problems and chronic are all common when going through a stressful period.
