Why It Is Necessary To Audit Your Database

Performing a database audit is relatively simple and in most cases it is a necessary part of your regular business routine

. Depending on the database you are using, you should be able to create a record that includes information about operations performed during a specific day or a random time period.

It is possible to determine when each operation was performed and by what employee. The employee that performed the operation can be determined either by their sign in data or their terminal location. You can easily verify that data is being entered correctly.

Most employers initiate audits when key personnel resign or retire. It is important to disable their clearances as soon as feasibly possible.

In some cases, an audit is the only way to determine what caused a system failure or crash. This is not a matter of pointing fingers. It should be approached from an educational standpoint.

It's safe to say that some of your employees are not technically "gifted". Your system support team, on the other hand, should be able to "fix" any problem caused by inaccurate data entry or other operations.

Solving the immediate problem is the first step. But, it should be followed by an instructional period. If one of your employees caused the problem, they should be made aware of how to avoid it in the future.

Audit records can be stored in the files of your operating system or they can be printed out, if you prefer. Storing them in your operating system is the suggested method. Paper files create unnecessary storage issues. Storing the records in your operating system creates less stress on your database as well. Just remember to save and back up all important data.

Finding information about performing an audit is easy enough. For example, if you are using Oracle, the necessary information and instructions concerning auditing are available online. Other brand names publish the information as well.

Your support team may need to audit configurations and settings on an occasional basis. New technology allows auditing of the SQL servers in a variety of database types, including Oracle, Microsoft and Informix. This type of auditing allows your team to ensure that unnecessary functions are disabled, which prevents the functions from being exploited by a hacker.

So, when your systems support team tells you that it is time to audit your database, you will know why it's necessary. It may take a little time today, but it protects the integrity and performance of your system in the future.
