Why It's Not Surprising That We Smoke

In many respects it's not surprising that, as human beings

, we have a tendency to crave certain types of drugs. These particular drugs have an ability to make us feel good after all and doesn't it feel as if life is so hard and complicated these days that all of us need to be able to "get away from it all," somehow? When you have had a tiresome long and troubling day at work, only to come home to issues with the family, or that night that's going to be filled with fun activities such as paying bills, it's not surprising that we've just had enough.

The tobacco industry is well aware of our inclination to look for a way out and has done its best to provide us with as many exits as possible. This industry is one of the most powerful in the world and one of the most successful and their products are widely available, on virtually every street corner.

If you want to mask some bad feelings, to try and feel better about life in general, or to depress that anxiety that seems to well up inside you all the time, there is hardly an easier "way out" than to light up a cigarette.

But what happens when you do? You will certainly find that the drug starts to interact with your body affecting your hormones, your metabolism and your brain. It will start to overcast the senses and give you a certain feeling of euphoria as the drug is circulated and interferes with information flow between the various nerve cells. In other words, it's just "masking" the real-world effects and causing a temporary fix which will go away as soon as the immediate effects wear off.

As the smoker inhales more and more cigarette smoke the so-called beneficial effects become less potent, causing the individual to smoke even more. The nervous system is simply adapting to this outside stimuli and trying to remove it, but you on the other hand want more and are smoking more cigarettes in order to get it. This is why smoking cessation becomes all the more difficult as time goes by. Your body evolves a tolerance to the drug and it takes more and more of the nicotine to get the same effect. After a while it tends to smooth out to a certain extent, which varies by the individual. This in part determines how many we might smoke in the day and why some may "only" smoke 10, whilst others may go through a pack and a half.

It's not that difficult to take the decision to stop smoking. However, the clock starts to tick after you've made your decision and the difficulty starts to ascend. You find that as soon as you quit smoking your body starts to feel different, you may experience edgy and irritated feelings, panic and anxiety and other nasty symptoms. In very many cases this simply prompts the person to reach out for a new pack, to make all that bad stuff go away.
